Backyard Basketball Courts Size
Let’s talk about dimensions first, there are a few benchmarks to consider: firstly, keep in mind that the free throw lane is 12 feet wide and the distance to the backboard is 15 feet, so to have the free throw lane on a back court you will need about 12 feet x 18 feet, keeping in mind that the backboard should not be on the edge of the court (I don’t want the kids to see a peg fall on the court).
If you want three-point lines on the field (obviously), you need to be at least 27 feet deep with the field away from the rim post. This will give you good space at the top of the three-point line to set up the shot. Remember that a three-point line is 19’9″ (3 high school points) from the centre of the hoop, not the backboard, not the post, and the centre of the hoop is 15″ from the backboard. If you want the full range of the three-point line, you need to have a minimum width of 45 feet and ideally 50 feet. The ideal basketball court we build is 30’x50′, since 50′ is the regulation width for basketball and 30′ provides more than 5′ of space at the top of the key.
If you don’t have enough space for the 3-point line, keep in mind the parameters for reducing the court size; for smaller courts, we build many basketball courts between 27’x27′ and 27’x35′. These courts offer the critical areas of the three-point line, are great fun, and can host incredible 3-on-3 games.

We highly recommend a concrete base for any new base to be built for a GreenSet sports field. Concrete offers by far the best longevity, performance and long-term value and will require virtually no maintenance or repair for many years. Paving stones, asphalt or terraces may also be suitable.
